What do we do in the summer?
If you are a 5th grader going into 6th grade, or a 6th grader going on to middle school, you need to make sure to play in the summer. 6th graders going on to Hillside Orchestra II must practice this summer. They will not be ready if they return after a summer off. I will give you some sheet music and worksheets to use, but getting a book at this point would be very helpful. Also, if you can take some private lessons, that would benefit your playing tremendously. Here are some books that I recommend if you are working on your own, and if you take lessons, they may have a book they prefer. I have a few recommendations for teachers on this web site under PRACTICE and HOW TO HELP, but you can take from anyone you know as well.
Sound Innovations Book 1 for your instrument - 5th grade going into 6th grade orchestra
6th graders going into Orchestra II at Hillside should get the Book 2 of Sound Innovations if they can, we will use it.
You can get these at a local music store, or online at Amazon or J W Pepper Music.
Tuning in the summer- try to find someone in the neighborhood who plays your instrument. Many high school students who play also know how to tune and could help. A local music store can help you, but might not be very convenient. If you take lessons, your teacher will tune you at every lesson. Your parents might be able to help you if they get a tuning app on their phone or tablet or have a tuner. I recommend the SNARK tuner. (You can buy them on Amazon for about $12) It is very easy to use. Pegs need to be pushed in as your turn them or they will not stay. If you have fine tuners, they are very easy to use, but only tune small amounts. Here are some great videos that may be helpful for parents who want to learn:
